Indian Head, Maryland, has deep roots in Indigenous history, once home to the Mattawoman tribe of the Piscataway people. The name “Indian Head” originates from “Indian Headlands,” reflecting its past as an Indian Reservation, first recorded in the 1800 Census.

During the Civil War, Union forces, including the 5th New Jersey Infantry, gathered near Budd’s Ferry, and the Union Army Balloon Corps conducted reconnaissance there.

Incorporated in 1920, Indian Head grew around the Naval Proving Ground (est. 1890), later evolving into the Naval Support Facility Indian Head. Specializing in gun and rocket propellants, the facility remains a hub for advanced research in energetic systems.

Today, Indian Head is a diverse community of about 3,400 residents, offering everything from affordable housing to luxury waterfront homes. A welcoming town, it prides itself on neighborly connections—where people still wave to each other.

A Great Place to Relax and Unwind with Nature

Feeling overwhelmed by stress and anxiety? Skip the harmful pharmaceuticals and immerse yourself in the healing power of nature. Spending time outdoors is just as effective at boosting your mood and reducing anxiety.

Indian Head, MD, just 30 miles south of Washington, DC, offers a peaceful escape with affordable homes and lower crime rates compared to our larger DC-area communities. It's an ideal spot for both residents and commuters, with easy access to DC via Piscataway Highway or commuter buses from nearby towns like Accokeek, La Plata, and Waldorf.

Home to the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Indian Head Division and the United States Bomb Disposal Technician Association, the area is experiencing growth, with new jobs and businesses emerging. NSWC’s expansion will bring even more opportunities, with multiple shifts running 24/7 to meet the country’s munitions needs.

Indian Head is also a hub for outdoor activities like kayaking, hiking, trail walking, and fishing competitions, with species such as striped bass, channel catfish, and northern snakehead in our local waters.

During July and August, Maryland's lotus blossoms emerge, transforming the tidal waters into a breathtaking display of thousands of blooms. Kayakers can paddle through this stunning natural spectacle, immersing themselves in the vibrant beauty.

As the community area grows, small businesses are returning. NSWC is investing in our community, even moving parts of the base into vacant storefronts.

Now is the perfect time to invest in our growing community before prices soar. With stunning parks along the Potomac River and Mattawoman Creek, you may just find yourself calling Indian Head home.
